Liszt's set of 12 Transcendental Etudes, reworked three times in three different editions, presents not just enormously difficult, technically demanding pieces, but challenges the performer to create distinct aural landscapes.He intended to expand the dozen to 48; however, he reworked them into the 1838 version of the Transcendental Etudes. During the period 1851-1852, Liszt revised the 12 pieces once more, now known as Études d'exécution transcendante. The 1838 and 1852 sets are quite similar, the former not necessarily appreciably more difficult than the latter.

'Transcendental Etude' means 'transcendental etude', where 'transcendental' means transcendental, excellent. The word 'tension from the other world' is used a lot these days, right? I would say that it is a practice song that requires extremely difficult technical skills, just like in the rest of the world.
